One evening not long ago, as my wife Sandy and I were polishing off dinner while listening to SiriusXM’s jazz channel, a marvelous piece of music graced our ears. It was Parisian Thoroughfare, a tune written by the late pianist Bud Powell. A key creator during the 1940s of the complex and quick-as-a-cat style of jazz known as bebop, Powell recorded a solo rendition of Parisian Thoroughfare in 1951. And it was this version (he subsequently recorded the composition two more times, once in a trio setting) that caused me to stop shoving food in my mouth for a few seconds so that I could listen closely. The song dazzled me, so jaunty is Powell’s approach to the keyboard, so beautiful are his cascades of notes. The performance delightfully captures Paris’s vibrancy. Before I go any further, let me introduce you to PT, courtesy of YouTube.
Over the next few days I guess it wasn’t too surprising that I couldn’t get Parisian Thoroughfare out of my mind. Not only did it make me think about the great times that I’ve had in Paris, a city I’ve been lucky enough to visit on four occasions, I also came to realize that it relates to a Netflix series that Sandy and I have been watching and enjoying the heck out of recently: Call My Agent! The show is set and was filmed in Paris, for one thing. And the banter and antics of Agent’s main characters sometimes are dizzying, rivalling the giddy speed at which Powell unleashes Parisian Thoroughfare.
I would describe Call My Agent!, whose French title is Dix Pour Cent, as a screwball comedy with depth. It follows the professional and personal affairs of four talent agents, their office staff and clients, and does so with charm, wit and poignancy. Sandy and I can find no flaws in the show, other than an occasional over-the-top moment. The dialogue is strong, the plot lines well-structured. And the acting? Ooh la la!
Now, here’s the thing: We never would have watched Call My Agent! were it not for our close friends Alan and Martine, who live in . . . shit yeah, they live in Paris! No lie. In March we were Facetiming with them, discussing this, that and whatever. Somewhere along the line the conversation turned to television, and Martine told us about Call My Agent!, which, in addition to streaming on Netflix, has aired on a French TV channel. Merci beaucoup, Martine, for the recommendation! We are in your debt.
That’s how a good bit of life unfolds, isn’t it? We often do what we do, go where we go, watch what we watch, based on recommendations. And, as a devoted viewer of television series (most evenings I spend an hour and a half or so in their presence), one of my aims in composing this essay is to learn about the shows that you enjoy. Between network television, premium channels and streaming services, there are more good ones out there than ever before. Your input will help me on my mission to remain highly entertained at night.
OK, so what other programs do I think a lot of? I’d be remiss not to mention The Investigation, a Danish production that dramatizes, soberly, the meticulous police investigation of a real-life murder that took place four years ago in waters separating Denmark from Sweden. The victim was journalist Kim Wall. Her final hours alive were spent aboard, of all things, a homemade submarine.
And then there’s Chernobyl. A retelling of the horrific accident at a Soviet nuclear reactor in 1986, and its aftermath, the show reinforced my belief that the human species, though highly intelligent in many ways, vastly overestimates its abilities to control that which it creates. Chernobyl is a limited series carried by HBO, as is The Investigation. In my opinion, they are well worth your viewership.
Time to move on to Family Guy, an animated series that is in its 19th season. In the USA, which is where I reside, new episodes are carried by Fox. And older episodes are on several networks here, including Fox. If anything is for sure in our little ol’ world, it’s that Family Guy ain’t your usual show. It’s as irreverent as anything I’ve ever seen. Family Guy ridicules religion and pop culture, for instance, and just about everything else. Yes, this program, which follows the whacko adventures and predicaments of the dysfunctional Griffin family, is not for everyone. Judging by its lengthy run, however, there are loads and loads of folks who dig it. And why is that so? Because, more than anything, Family Guy is hilarious.

Yes, as the commenter above said, Rake is a great series; it drops off in quality toward the end, but the first four seasons are very enjoyable. I’ve been watching Call My Agent in French (I’m French-Canadian) and so far, have enjoyed it (only three episodes in). Thanks for the suggestions. Sleep well. 😉

I’ve got a few favourite shows: Midsomer Murders, now in its 22nd series, Hard Quiz, an Aussie hybrid of quiz show and comedy, and a series called ‘Wakefield’ set in a psychiatric hospital of the same name in the picturesque Blue Mountains. And as for film: I can’t laud ‘The Big Dry’ enough, an Aussie masterpiece starring Eric Bana. I saw it on the big screen where it belongs. You must see it, Neil — and oh, I enjoyed Bud Powell. Well what a recommendation for call my agent. Will have to try it. At the moment my husband and I are feeling bereft because we have watched an episode of two each night of Deutschland 83, 86 and 89. It’s about a young East German who is inveigled into being a spy. An agent. A double agent. He is confused. So are we, some of the time. He’s a bit unlikeable at first but then his charm and biiiig blue eyes win you over. And his habit of telling people the truth about himself. They don’t believe him. Gripping stuff I don’t know if you can get it in the Us but it’s co-written by an amiracsn German couple. Authentic. And wonderful eighties interiors

We loved Call My Agent. Some great characters in it, some of whom then popped up in Emily In Paris (no subtitles this time) which we also enjoyed. Lupin was another clever French drama about a gentleman thief. (All on Netflix.)
So much great telly around at the moment but I fear our cinemas may never get back to business as usual. Even the Oscars this year had to include Netflix shows this year. Shame as most of my socialising with friends took place at the cinema – A drink and a chat first then the film – Missing it very much.

Hi. I know what you mean. My wife and I would go to cinemas often. Some have opened again in our state, but we haven’t gone to them. Yet. We’re vaccinated, so I suppose it’s safe to go there. By the way, did you watch the Oscars? It was very different from their usual production, but at least there were people in the audience.

Hi Neil, Thanks for interesting post. When young, we used to frequent the West End of London and attend a ‘foreign film’ cinema where we watched fascinating French and Italian films with sub-titles. Fast forward ‘donkey’s years’ and we enjoyed ‘Spiral’- a French series recently (serious) and we also saw the Danish submarine murder you mentioned- We haven’t got Netflix, so must look out for the comedy series Call my Agent and Family Guy, as we love humour..Did you catch Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. I’m not a television viewer. However, lately I’ve been watching YouTube documentaries of airliner disasters and other airline related videos. I don’t know why. They have simply snagged my attention.

I LOVED “Call My Agent.” You described it perfectly. Over the top, yes, but it also is about something. This, to me, raises the show above mere farce. Another recent show that does this—an American show—is “Rutherford Falls,” on Peacock. It’s a sitcom that’s actually about something. This gives it some punch. My son-in-law, on the other hand, wants sitcoms to be just sitcoms, with no larger meanings. Different people, different tastes. But, one thing we can all agree on, I think: Vive la France!

I too have been watching and listening to music that are not my language … I feel I’m away and not here in the mess of Alberta … I also appreciate telly when humans look ‘real’ and natural so I appreciated that in ‘call my agent’ … it was delightful…I will try the danish one now Neil … happy spring 🌷🌞 sending you joy 💫 hedy

I listened to this song as I read your post. I like it. Family Guy was always on at our house because our daughters used to watch it religiously (a bit inappropriate, I know, but hey).

We watched Call my Agent in French…so very funny. We also watched Emily in Paris, which we would not have done had it not been for french friends enthusing abiut it as poking fun at Parisians – something which makes all rural french people happy. – us too.
Spiral is brilliant…but you might need to start at series 1, and we liked Marseilles,starring Depardieu.
I don’t know if Line of Duty is on anything but BBC….but the early series are super – a police unit investigating bent coppers. Worth it for the boss, played as a chao from Northern Ireland who has had half the nation shouting ‘Mother of God’ and ‘Now we’re sucking diesel’.

So much in this post, Neil, from jazz piano to Sirius to TV shows. Where do I start! OK, Sirius–that’s my streaming music channel of choice also because I already pay for it to be in my car. They do well. I love how you crowdsource your TV show inspiration–from your Parisienne friends. “..a screwball comedy with depth…” I have one of those (though admittedly short on depth)–Brooklyn 99. Funny, dumb and I can’t believe I like it.

We’re not finding many new shows that hold our interest (though I will look for Call My Agent), so we keep returning to old favorites that we know are stellar: Life, The Newsroom, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. For half-hour shows, Sports Night and Frank’s Place are classics that still shine and, more recently, The Good Place was outstanding. And, yes, Bud Powell is always a treasure.

I didn’t think to check whether they’re available for streaming. I don’t think Frank’s Place is. We still have the episodes we copied from our TV when the original series aired. I think some are available on YouTube. We’ve gotten Sports Night in DVD from our local library. I think some of the streaming services like Prime and IMDB Video also offer it. Knowing that we share a fondness for those makes me suspect I will like Call My Agent.

I don’t watch much television, but I also have fond memories of Paris, one of them being a superb concert with Diana Krall. By the way, it looks like the video isn’t available for me, but perhaps it’s because I’m not in the US.

Yeah, YouTube is weird. Videos don’t necessarily play in every country. You probably can find another video of it on YouTube which will play where you live. Very good performance by Bud Powell.

I don’t mind subtitles, but I’d prefer to be able to understand it in French. I can make out a bit of the French here and there, but my command of the language is definitely nothing to write home about.

Good timing on the “Call My Agent” rec, as we’re wrapping up a six-season binge of “Southern Charm” and looking for something new. SC is about the intertwined lives of a handful of the rich and trust-funded in Charleston, SC. The personalities make the show, as well as the look into privileged (and often wasted) lifestyles. The first several seasons are the best; later seasons focus more on petty drama and less on real life. SC is on Bravo but you can purchase past seasons on Prime Video.

Call My Agent is on my ‘to try’ list. The UK has been going nuts recently over the latest series of ‘Line of Duty,’ a corrupt cops and robbers thing that is very intircately plotted and well acted. Well recommended but you should probably start at the beginning.
Also on Netflix: ‘Money Heist’ (Casa de Papel) about an ethical bunch of robbers who take over Spain’s Royal Mint…

You have me very curious on the Danish production. Chernobyl Ive heard about. I think it has Stellan Skarsgard in it. You mentioned another show in previous post, diplomatic something or other??? I dont watch a lot of the tube but a few series have got me over the years. These suggestions sound worth checking out.

We stopped our subscription to Sirius-XM a few years ago for budgetary reasons, but I must admit that I really miss that specific station (“Real Jazz”). My favorite DJ was Les Davis; I don’t know if he’s still on it, but I really thought he was great. Marcus Miller too. You’re inspiring me to maybe smash the piggy bank and re-join.
Family Guy is a favorite of ours, though only one of us in our household will admit to it. 🙂 – Marty

Hey there. It’s possible that Sirius has discount prices available. I got lowered prices from them last year. And you don’t necessarily have to get it for the car. You can subscribe for home use: you would then download a Sirius app to your phone. I’ve watched Family Guy since it’s inception. It’s hilarious!
My taste in TV fare probably runs against the grain from what I’ve read in the comments here. To me, the best two series I’ve watched in a long time both stream from Amazon Prime: The Man in the High Castle (which has completed) and The Expanse (which has one more season to go). Oh…and also Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Isn’t that awful when you have to wait for a new season. It’s even worse when a decision is made not to continue the show. We were hooked on “People of Earth” and that stopped, and then there was a show about Memphis and rock ‘n’ roll… we loved it, and nope, no ending to it. Just cancelled for no good reason. 😦

I’ve been wanting to watch the HBO Chernobyl miniseries. Earlier this year I read Midnight in Cherno byl. Have you checked out Kim’s Convenience? that’s a series on Netflix. We watched that last year, it was one of our favorite shows to watch with our oldest boy. So I guess I recommend that. It was the beginning of the pandemic and we binged watched it for ultimate escapism and man alive were we disappointed when it was over. I’m not versed in jazz really at all but my oldest is going to be in jazz band next year, he’s gotten pretty good on trumpet and his band teacher thinks he needs to go that route, so we’ve been trying to learn all the greats and standards because it’s important to know those things despite my not knowing them at my advanced age. We’ll listen to Bud Powell, that could be pretty cool for my son because he plays piano, too. We’ve been listening to Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis. My very youngest likes to draw to the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Well, happy Thursday Neil.

But I’ll mention that your son might want to check out Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Duke Ellington, Randy Weston, Horace Silver — I could go on and on, but I’ll stop. All of them were composers as well as players. Of the ones I mentioned, Tyner, Ellington, Weston and Silver were pianists. See ya!

I’m putting The Investigation on my list.Thanks! If you want other great French series, try Lupin and The Break (actually Belgian I think). Topping the recent favourite list for me is multi-season Shtisel, an Israeli series about an ultra-orthodox family in Jerusalem.

Yes, really enjoyed Unorthodox. The female lead in Unorthodox plays a main character in Shtisel.

Amazed to learn Family Guy is still running. I have my 31-year-old son’s DVDs of the first 3 seasons from when he was in high school. Does this make me a millionaire??? Ha-ha, if only. Then I could live in Paris, which like you, I visit often and love the ooh-la-la of it all. In fact, we were supposed to spend 3 weeks in Paris when COVID screwed up everything, but je reviens. The cafes of Montmartre are calling to me.
