I’ve met but one fellow WordPress scribe in the flesh. And the person in question, Andrew Ferguson, proved to be even warmer and more gracious than I’d anticipated. My wife Sandy and I spent a day with Andrew and his wife Alison in 2019 on their home turf — Scotland — where Sandy and I were vacationing. I bring up Andrew right now because his thoughts on my country’s (i.e., the USA’s) recent presidential election are totally in tune with mine. Here’s what he wrote:
“We woke up . . . to the news that more than half of the US voting public had taken leave of their senses and voted for Trump — again. If you didn’t enjoy the first movie, Trump II: This Time It’s More Mental promises to have even more bad actors. Coming to a political and environmental shitshow near you in January.”
Even though Andrew’s analysis is perfection (click here to read the wide-ranging article in which his Trump commentary appears), there’s plenty I can add. Such as this: Oy frigging vey! Are you shitting me? A riot-inciter and convicted felon is soon to wield immense power for a second term? Man, sometimes bad dreams come true. This is one of those instances.
I could go on and on about the president-elect. But I won’t, as my blood pressure is starting to rise like a hot air balloon. That’s what writing about a vindictive, freedoms-suppressing bully does to me. It’s time, then, to steer this essay into currents I’m comfortable navigating. So, excuse me for a moment while I allow my aged systems to decompress. Ahh, I’m feeling better already. Onward to an agreeable topic.
Since early 2020 I’ve watched an hour or two of television series most evenings, something I hadn’t done in years. I turned to TV because of the COVID pandemic, which left my spirits in need of some boosting. Series-viewing was just what the doctor ordered. I became infatuated right from the start, and the infatuation hasn’t lessened at all. My mind continually is blown by the gargantuan number of available series, and by the good-to-great quality of a sizable percentage of them. I’m certain I won’t terminate what has become one of my favorite activities until the Grim Reaper confronts me and utters words to this effect: “Your days are more than numbered, schmuck. They now are over.”
Not being one who is enamored by advertisements, the vast majority of the series I’ve seen have been on streaming services, as opposed to traditional television. Sandy is my steady viewing companion, I hasten to add. We possess quite similar tastes in series fare. And each of us appreciates having someone a foot away who can offer help when uncertainty arises about what the hell just happened in a scene or about what a character meant by what they said. I’m not ashamed to say that I get puzzled a whole lot more frequently than my spouse does.
Do you have any series recommendations? I’m always eager to learn about shows I’m unfamiliar with. Here are a few I watched in 2024 that I think highly of: Lessons In Chemistry; The Last Days Of Ptolemy Grey; John Adams. The first two are on Apple TV+, and the latter can be found on MAX.
Speaking of MAX, Sandy and I are fans of that broadcaster’s Starstruck, a series I hadn’t heard of until two months ago. Starstruck, which originally ran from 2021 to 2023, consists of 18 episodes spread over three seasons, each installment a mere 23 or so minutes in length. Truly hooked, Sandy and I polished off Starstruck in about one week.
Though a rom-com, Starstruck doesn’t head in directions you might expect. Its main storyline follows Jessie, a gal in her late 20s at series’ start, and Tom, who maybe is a few years older than that. They first set eyes on one another in a pub in London, England, on New Year’s Eve. Natch, they end up spending the night together, sparks flying to a decent extent. Eventually they begin an on-again, off-again romance that frustrates and confuses them both. Are they mismatched socio-economically? Jessie, after all, struggles to make a living, while Tom is a pretty well-known movie actor. Tom, an unassuming sort, isn’t concerned about their financial and fame disparities, though. The show incisively reveals that the reasons behind their fits-and-starts relationship are far more meaningful.
Rose Matafeo, previously an unknown to me, created, co-wrote and stars (as Jessie) in Starstruck. The inspiration for the series, I’ve read, came from incidents in her personal life. She’s a talent. The show is full of witty repartee and spot-on zingers, and has its share of moments that seriously tug at your heart. And Matafeo’s Jessie is completely believable as an uninhibited cum vulnerable young lady. It doesn’t need repeating, but I’ll say it anyway: I like Starstruck a lot.

And this time the troglodytes accompanying him are even worse. He and that fungus Musk are attacking us at every turn with the most asinine twaddle. Ugh. But like you, my BP climbs and I have to forget about him.
As to series, we recently watched Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, older ones but definitely good. Thanks for sharing your recent find.

One of these days I hope to watch Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I’ve had it in the back of my mind to do so. Another well-regarded dramatic series is The Wire — we are in the middle of watching season one. So far, we like it quite a lot.

I really enjoyed ‘Black Doves’ recently. I don’t know if you get these but one of my favourite shows came to an end the other day ‘Vera’ – we also enjoy ‘Shetland’. We tend to like a lot of crime dramas.

I despair at the deliberate ignorance of half of the voting population of these United States. Like you, I must take breaks to allow the mind to recuperate awhile. I will check out “Starstruck” as per your recommendation. It looks like a good antidote to the vapidness of American society these days.

Good to hear from you, Neil. I recently signed up with Netflix and am currently enjoying 100 years of Solitude. I’ve also enjoyed the three body problem on there. UK based shows are a bit of a dry patch at the minute for me, but recently watched (for the third time) all three series of The Detectorists – originally a BBC production but now also on Netflix.

Sorry, I have nothing to recommend from the boob tube, since I do not bow to the alter of commercialism, but from limited encounters with people from abroad, I note that a surprising number of them, like your friend Andrew, are all too familiar with the global swing to the far political right, and understand, better than half the voting populace of America, the utter shitshow we’re about to undergo with King Donald. I’d recommend we read good books, take walks with the spirit of peace, and hope for better years ahead.

As for recommendations: If you have AppleTV, I HIGHLY recommend Ted Lasso and Shrinking. Both are comedy/dramas, incredibly well-written, and the casting is spot on.
Here’s hoping the next four years aren’t as bad as we expect them to be.

As you will already know, I don’t write on politics but I do pay attention to the political situation here in Ireland and elsewhere. Briefly regarding a general election here in Ireland recently: in the months prior to the election there was a very strong rise in what I will vaguely describe as far-right activism, anti-immigration, anti-establishment etc and even one night of rioting in the capital. The results of the election showed that the general population had no time for moving the country in that direction and central, central left parties are now in negotiations to form the next government. Re your situation in the U.S., the general reactions here are of disbelief and nervousness – disbelief that a person of Donald Trump’s character and persona should bring such support from the American people and a nervousness for the impact of his presidency on Irish affairs – he has suggested American companies based in Ireland should repatriate though recent newspaper reports from these companies state they are here because we have the skilled workforce they need while this is not available in the U.S. Of course, his impact on wider world affairs is a cause of great concern also. Under his presidency are unelected people such as Elon Musk to have influence beyond and outside the democratic process? Enough, I’ve dipped my toe into a political discussion and will now retreat to gardening and other general matters.

Oh dear, I was afraid the topic of politics would come up. I wish we had the opportunity to discuss the subject over a brew or a cocktail but an exchange via keypads by two people who have never physically met tend to not go well for either party, so best to just leave it there.
It’s not binge material, but the Mrs. and I have been occasionally dipping into 1950s episodes of Dragnet that are available on the Roku Channel. They are definitely period pieces, but a fascinating look back at mid-century America.

Neil, thanks for the mention – I wish I’d been making a happier comment, but having read an article today in the Times which argues, convincingly, that 20th century liberalism is finally dying out, I feel increasingly depressed by the situation worldwide. However, as your friend Paddy points out, some countries are still governed by centre-left parties – and much as I might disagree with some of what they do, at least at the moment that’s the position in the UK (Labour) and Scotland (SNP). I’ll now go back to blogging about obscure guitar marques and encounters with Bob Dylan in local supermarkets.
On more pleasant topics, there’s an engagingly off-beat BBC series called Ludwig you might enjoy; although it might be a bit too Scottish, Only Child, about a grown-up son moving back in with his ageing father was a good combination of pathos and bathos.

As a Canadian who hopes her views are shared by many other Canadians, I share your Trump views. Buckle up. It wasn’t pleasant the first time. The ego and antics will be worse the second time.
My husband and I also spend our evenings watching series on streaming services. One of our favourite is Vera on Brit Box, which is available on Prime.

First, the good: I LOVE The Detectorists and I think you will, too. (I’ve seen the entire series twice, a few years ago.) In 2024, I loved Shrinking (Harrison Ford is perfect in the role), liked Bad Sisters a lot, and enjoyed (and am still enjoying) Astrid (on PBS). Now the bad: There’s Virgin River, which I’m hooked on because it’s so bad it’s almost good, and our current political situation, which really sucks. I see eye to eye with you about the felon, whom I like to refer to as Tiny Margin. I’m depending on tv and other distractions to get me through the next 4 years. It helps to hear from kindred spirits like you!

During the Pandemic, I found out how much my wife had us paying for cable and decided to get my money’s worth by streaming some of the shows like Ted Lasso and Shrinking. Thanks for some new leads like Starstruck. An added benefit: I no longer have time to watch the Trump Show which has a ridiculously far fetched plotline and horrible actors.

I am incensed at what he is trying to do to our country from a position of ignorant prejudice, including pretty much putting a target on the back of a female MP. I agree with Andrew up to a point, though describing Labour and the SNP as centre left is flattering. Both far too timid for my taste, especially Labour!

Indeed, it’s going to be a lonnnnng four years. I’m just not a TV/movie person; wish I were because we all need diversion. I climbed out of the dark pit of despair by starting a Substack page — as if anybody needed one more technological hurdle — bcz my diversion is finding rays of optimism and reporting them once a week. If they’re not too political I put them also on WordPress and you see them and thank you! We persevere. Write on!!

I don’t watch much TV and my husband hogged the remote for the Boxing Day Test Match between Australia and India. That’s five days of cricket for the uninitiated, of which I wish I was one 🙂
Series we have watched together in the past are Dopesick and Kin. It seems we are into drug dealers whether they are legal or not.
I’ll stick my political neck out and say if the US had compulsory voting as we do in Australia the result would have been different. But I’m sticking my neck out even further by coming to the States for a seven-week holiday beginning April. I really agonised over the decision, until deciding I will simply be a tourist and can turn a blind eye to all the rest if I work at it hard enough. We’ll be riding the trains, west coast to east coast, so I live in hope of meeting lots of “nice” Americans.

Maya Angelou said it best: “When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.” I guess some people just were not paying attention. If we all make it through the next four years and we get to have an election, maybe these people will have learned something. In the meantime, hold on to your chair because I think we’re in for a very bumpy ride. A show I love is Outlander. It’s a period piece. It’s on Starz but there are episodes on Netflix.

While in Canada recently our friends were glued to the TV and were resoundingly not in favour of trump being re-elected as president again. It is hard to credit so many people have been lured by this creep’s rhetoric.
Nice that you met with a WordPress scribe in the flesh. I have done that with a Melbournite, and hope to do with a European scribe.
And, good suggestion to add New Zealand after Wellington in the book blurb, as there are many towns and cities bearing that name.

Hmm, interesting! Without having seen The Wire, but having had to caption five or six black-oriented shows, I got SO tired of the cliches, you know? Every single show I captioned revolving around black lives showed black people in poverty, fighting poverty, doing drugs, fighting addictions, or selling drugs. It was ridiculous and, frankly, insulting. I don’t know if The Wire’s like that at all, but I’m suspecting……. 🙂

Yikes! Trump is delusional this week, thinking he can make Canada another state. What an idiotic narcissist! I have mostly been watching Christmas rom coms for the last month. Ted Lasso and Daisy Jones and the 6 are great on Apple TV. I haven’t watched the latest seasons, but the Witcher and The Crown on Netflix are fabulous. Great post. I was devastated when the Orange one was voted in. American people, why, why, why? And I’m really worried about the planet, the global population, democracy and everything else… anyway, I’ve resolved that I will not be watching the news and will limit by excursions online on the 20th and 21st as I do not want to witness any of the inauguration, nor our UK and Scottish politicians and journalists toadying up to him, and will instead embark on binge watching you and your commenters fine recommendations! I know you don’t have Apple at the moment, but Silo is great. All the best for 2025.

Hi, Neil. You can always subscribe just for a month or two to Apple TV+ and binge the shows you might be wanting to see. I have to say, we watched the first season of “Shrinking” and gave it a C+ grade. The second season? A solid A! They gave more prominence to some of the secondary characters, and it really worked, I thought.
As for Trump, I can’t look at him or read about him. I’m burying my head far down into the sand. I was a registered Republican until 2016 when I left the party because of Trump’s nomination and because the party itself had turned into a s$$tshow.

Hi, Velva. We had a free trial subscription to Apple TV, and saw the first season of Shrinking. We liked it a lot. Apple TV has plenty of good series, so we probably will take out a paid subscription fairly soon. Enjoy the upcoming weekend. See ya!

I applaud your pal Andrew’s analysis. “Bang on!” as they say in the UK. By the way, can Andrew possibly arrange for say 50 million or so–or at least 2–visas to the UK that have no expiration date? I think they’d go like hotcakes now. Okay, in honor of your blood pressure, I will limit my comments on that topic and say that Ed and I have enjoyed some great series over the past few years, but most evenings, we select a movie from our vast store of same to accompany dinner. We watch and love a wide array of film genres. Last night it was the original Lavender Hill Mob. But anything made between 1930 and the present is fair game.

Evening, Amy. Movie-watching is a fine way to spend one’s time. Do you and Ed ever watch any silent films? I rarely do, but one of those I like a lot is The General, by Buster Keaton.

No, we haven’t done silents. We’ve both tried them in our past youth and not really been “grabbed” by them, but I’m certain Buster Keaton would be grateful for your interest!

I did stumble across a good show a wee while back that I did sit down to watch as oft as time allowed – Brokenwood Mysteries. Nothing cerebral … simply entertaining.

It is popular, understandably so (solid acting and decent storylines) … quite a pleasant sit-back-and-relax show.
