I Like ‘Em! (These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things)

One thing for certain about this little old world of ours is that it holds an overwhelming amount of content geared for human discovery and consumption. Travel destinations, food stuffs, movies, automobiles, political causes, you name it . . . there’s always something for us to get excited about and sink our teeth into, if we are so inclined. Which, no doubt, nearly every one of us is. Myself included.

This story, then, shall be a look at a few things that have rung my bell quite nicely as of late. In the upcoming paragraphs I’ll expend wordage upon this motley group: a television series (Ozark), cheddar cheese, and the song (Texas Sun) that has captivated me more than any other recording so far during pandemic-plagued 2020. And I’ll be glad to hear about what has been tickling your fancies recently. So, please don’t be shy about letting me know.

Let’s start with Ozark, the Netflix series whose third season was unleashed earlier this year. My wife and I watched all three seasons over the past few months, taking a two or three week breather between each arc. (The fourth and final season is on the drawing board, but who knows when filming will be able to begin.) We became hooked almost from the get-go, as have millions around the globe. Not so one of my cousins though. When I mentioned Ozark to her during a phone conversation not long ago, she said she’d seen a few minutes of the show but that’s about all. “I don’t want to watch all those sleazy people” was more or less how she summed up her feelings about Ozark.

Sleazy? Indeed! That word damn well fully applies to many of the show’s characters. It barely indicates, though, the depths of their polluted natures.

In Ozark we learn the tale of a married couple, Marty and Wendy Byrde (played, respectively, by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) that is ordered by a Mexican drug cartel to abandon their home in Chicago and relocate, with their two kids, to central Missouri’s Lake Of The Ozarks. LOTO, an enormous man-made lake and a popular vacation spot, is surrounded by rural territory populated with all sorts of unsavory individuals.

Why did the cartel so demand? Because Marty, a buttoned-down financial wizard who years before had agreed, foolishly, to become one of the cartel’s primary money launderers, through no fault of his own got on the cartel’s very wrong side. Via astonishingly quick thinking and quick talking, he avoided execution by convincing the cartel’s top brass that he could make and launder enormous monies for them in, of all places, the Lake Of The Ozarks. Turns out he was pretty right as rain, though establishing the mechanisms that enable that to happen send Marty and his family down hellish paths that in a million years they otherwise wouldn’t have imagined could emerge. And their ordeals gradually bring out the worst in Marty, and the scarily worst in Wendy.

I can see the show’s writers rubbing their hands gleefully as they came up with plot lines that continuously elevate the dangers and other mega-problems that Marty and Wendy must confront. What a series! Prominent cast members regularly meet their demise. Dirty-dealing and treachery reign supreme. Ozark isn’t for everybody, as my cousin demonstrates, but, if you’re not already a fan, it just might be for you.

Now on to cheese. I’ve been a cheese lover for many moons, and cheddar is one of my favorite types. But not the mild kind. I like cheddar that is bold, aggressive and memorable. Those are qualities, by the way, that yours truly sorely lacks.

But it never has been easy for picky me to find cheddars that I deem outstanding. Vermont, for instance, is famed for its cheddars, but I’ve yet to taste a Vermont cheddar that truly knocks my socks off. Thankfully, about four years ago I stumbled upon Old Croc cheddar, which is produced in Australia. The brand’s extra sharp version pleases me deeply. As does a very recent discovery of mine: Sartori’s aged and sharp cheddar. Heavy with elevated flavor, and salty, it is the first American-made cheddar to receive my seal of approval. Take a bow, state of Wisconsin! Pieces of Old Croc and/or Sartori have been my go-to lunch of late. They’re delicious as is, and even better when atop Triscuit crackers.

I wouldn’t dare eat those cheddars while listening to Texas Sun, however. That’s because the process of munching away would interfere with my ability to absorb this oh-so-fine song, which was released in February. A collaboration between vocalist Leon Bridges, who often makes soul music in the vein of Sam Cooke, and indie rock band Khruangbin, Texas Sun is a meditation on longing and lust. It is gently powered by a sweet and steady beat, and wafts upon the wings of dreamy guitar lines. I’ve heard this song many times on various radio stations, which indicates to me that it has found its way into the hearts of numerous music lovers and radio programmers. The best thing for me now to do is to get out of the way and allow you to listen. Here is Texas Sun:

    Ozark has flashed past my attention but hasn’t grabbed it but, then, we are not great film watchers. Mary doesn’t watch films very much as she has trouble with hearing and accents are a challenge for her. Cheddar is the everyday cheese here but we have a particular Irish blue cheese, Cashel Blue, which we particularly like and also, the various soft cheeses, Brie and the likes. Music – I’m now the deaf one!

    Plants, garden or wild, continue to engross me. Walking also – countryside walking; I cannot abide walking in town.

    Not at all exciting this morning is a visit to hospital – old man’s problems, as they say here, but nothing of consequence, just nuisance! All will be well.

    I do like recommendations, and we must have passed Ozark when browsing on Netflix. I’ll have to give it a look now. I’m with you on the cheddar score, though. One of the things I’m missing at the moment is testing my way through a well-stocked cheese counter at the local farmer’s market.

    Leo is an Ozark fan – I don’t have the time to follow serials, unforrunately, but I did have the great thrill of being able to watch cricket on TV for the first time since it ceased being free to air in 2005. It was only a short form of the game…but such a treat’!
    Cheese….I have never found anything approaching decent cheddar in Costa Rica, so used to bring it back in my luggage when visiting my mother in England.
    Luckily there is a firm making French style cheese which I can buy on a local market…so we can enjoy Brie, Camembert and a really good goat cheese from them which would have passed muster even in France.
    I enjoyed the music…again, thanks.
    One thing which has given me an absurd amount of pleasure is moving a table onto the porch area…the sun hits it in the morning and we can breakfast among the ginger flowers and the big bushes of pastora, huge red bracts attracting the butterflies

    I, too, really like “Ozark,” but my husband, as usual, whines that it’s too dark. I want to note that while I like an uplifting story as much as the next person, few stories are too dark for me. I am fascinated by the less savory aspects of human nature and how easy the descent is.

    Love the name of that cheese. Glad you found a cheddar with snap.

    Finally, “Texas Sun” is a wonderful song—I really like Leon Bridges—and I am listening to it right now.

    Hey Neil – i’m kind of a cheese fanatic, too, that’s why I moved to Wisconsin. Well, maybe it was for a job, but the cheese is definitely a plus. I will treat your recommendation as a quest, and look for this cheese 🧀 when I make my weekly trip to the big grocery store on the other side of town.
    have you ever tried Black Diamond? from Belleville, Ontario about an hour and a half west of the 1000 Islands, good stuff with a bite, one of my granddads always used it for Welsh rarebit. Speaking of directions, your auto-spell has changed states for the Ozarks, I think they’re still in Missouri.
    and I have to put in a plug for my hometown, Muranda Cheese Co., that’s Tom Murray, who bred Holsteins for many years, and now makes amazing cheese, his Old Man Cheddar has a real kick, he now ships this stuff all over the world. His aged English cheddar is pretty excellent also.
    I listened to that song, watched the video on YouTube, good roadtrip tune!

    I’ve not seen that cheese but will keep eye out. Thankfully have a cheese shop where I’m able to try many different types of cheese. Like you, I love the sharp cheeses best.

    Have you tried BEEMSTER? It’s crunchy and creamy and I think you might enjoy if you love cheddar.

    Haven’t watched OZARK yet, but you’ve painted an enticing picture of it !

    I haven’t watched the Ozark series. Not my kind of show. I enjoy a good sci-fi series. This past weekend, I watched Netflix’s first season of AWAY with Hilary Swank. I love cheddar cheese. Sad to say, it’s the last of my guilty pleasures I had to give up for the sake of good heart health. Beautiful song. On Saturday, I reached for my Elton John favorites to soothe my pandemic blues. Thank the gods for music!

    Love the recommendations! I’ve tried “Ozark” because I adore Jason Bateman, but it was too much for my delicate sensibilities. The cheddar, however, is now on my grocery list.     The acting in Ozark was amazing and the storyline was at first unpredictable and fast-paced. I was hooked for awhile and then got tired of the darkness. My favorite cheese is Swiss cheese. On rye bread with dijon mustard and a dill pickle. I’m kind of a sourpuss.

    I liked the song, thanks for introducing me to it! I haven’t watched Ozark, but since getting Netflix recently, I have discovered “Shitt’s Creek” which I do enjoy. At the moment, I’m sticking mostly with comedies, as life is already show me too much of the dark side of human nature. But I’ll keep Ozark in mind for future viewing!

    Ozark is one of the best things to have graced our screens in the last few years. A real rollercoaster in terms of plotline. Ruth is an amazing character who used her own accent for the audition apparently, against advice, but it got her the job.

    My husband was hooked on Ozark, along with all the other excellent series on Netflix and Prime. For me, its a bit on principle that i wont get held hostage by the shows. Butthe only way isto not start because once I do, i get addicted. “One more episode?” And 4 hours later …;-)

      To replace all the movies and concerts I went to for years, I’ve been watching a lot of TV series since the pandemic started. They entertain me a lot. Last week we watched a series called The Stranger. Now we’re watching Barry. I’m becoming a TV addict!

    It’s quite remarkable, really, but knew not one of your favorite things, Neil (thank you for the ear worm, BTW). I enjoyed the song and would likely enjoy the cheese as well, but I think I’m with your cousin when it comes to #1 above, based on your description alone, as I never have (and never will) watch this series. But it would be awfully boring if all of us liked all of the same things.

    Having lived in Missouri for eight years, and vacationed at Lake of the Ozarks once, I’d be intrigued to see how the dark dealings of the TV series contrast with the kind of bland Midwest “resort” area I remember–but first I have to finish watching seasons 2-6 of my current obsession, The Americans, on Amazon! There’s a lot of cold-blooded killing on that show, too, but the characters are simply fascinating.

    I’ve heard Texas Sun many times on WXPN, and stop to listen every time. It’s mesmerizing. Another great recommendation, Neil!

    Binge watched Ozark and it was another Breaking Bad in progress.The last season ended on a cliffhanger. Can’t imagine how it’ll all end , the possibilities are immense.

    Having recently moved to the US, I have just discovered Old Croc cheddar and I must admit I was terribly confused. It is marketed as Australian but is not a brand I have ever seen in Australia. Initially I thought it was just another Outback Steakhouse (not Australian despite its marketing). You inspired me to investigate further. It is made in Australia solely for the US market and is closer in style and taste to cheddar available in Australia. I too like a cheddar that is bold, aggressive and memorable and have been disappointed by what I have tried so far here. Old Croc extra sharp is now on my shopping list.

    I enjoyed Texas Sun, and checked out IMDb for a trailer for Ozark which I hadn’t heard of. Hmm, too violent, and for me Laura Linney is forever the naive Mary Ann Singleton Of Tales of the City. Can’t argue about cheese though, I love an extra mature cheddar.

    Yes – loved Ozark. Complex characters. I presume you already watched Breaking Bad? Also very violent but very smart. What else… I go for a lot of English dramas. And adore Leon Bridges. Out the door for one of them walks we both enjoy, with a cigar in my mouth and a chocolate bar in my pocket (A few of my favorite things). Yeah I know the chocolate bar will melt but I like them that way.

        Different brands up here. I’m partial to Oh Henry. Mars, Snickers, Crispy Crunch (Like your Butter finger ) and just about any kind of dark (goes good with the stogie). Place in Victoria, Rogers Chocolate. Unbelievable. I’ll treat you there one day. The vibe of Government St is Neil’s style, Beer, books, restaurants and vibe.

    The song is mellow – sounds like good road trip music. We are gripped by Occupied – another Netflix series. It is set in the near future of Norway when the Russians move in. Utterly believable apart from the Thorium…
    Cheese is my nemesis but I do love a cheese from Trader Joe – Toscano cheese soaked in Syrah. Sharp, crumbly and salty.

    I tried to get hubby interested in this by floating Bateman in front of him, ’cause we’ve always enjoyed him as the straight man in comedies, but it looks like I’ll have to watch on my lonesome (if I ever get the time!)

    If you’re interested in the deconstruction of the superhero, you should watch The Boys.
    They’re already into season two. I think they got it done before we were all locked down.
    It’s gritty, raw, surprising. Not for everybody, tho…

      Hello Stacey. I just looked up The Boys. It sounds good. We don’t have Amazon though, so for now we won’t be able to watch it. I’m constantly amazed by the huge number of series that are available these days. When I was a kid, there was only a relative handful of shows.

    haven’t seen Ozarks, Neil, though I’ve seen every episode of ‘Breaking Bad’ with it reminds me of; how does that show rate alongside Ozarks, do you think ?

      Haven’t seen Breaking Bad. I’ve watched lots of series during the pandemic. But I watched very few series for years and years prior to the pandemic. I’m making up for lost time now.

    Thanks for sharing some of your favorite things of late. My husband is watching Ozark without me. Maybe I’ll binge watch when he is away. I used to work in a cheese shop as a teen and love all kinds of cheese … but I’m not supposed to eat dairy. Sometimes I just have to cheat … I’ll look for these when I can’t live without it any longer! I like the song. A lot of Texan’s come up here to Colorado’s San Juan’s to get out of the ‘Texas Sun’ in the summer!

    I love, love, Ozark too! I’ll have to give those cheddar cheeses a try. I love Tillamook cheddar and all their wonderful products. They’re pretty local for us so that makes it nice. Really enjoyed Texas Sun. Thank you for introducing them to us.

    My husband loves Ozark. He spends more time in front of the TV than me and this one has become a solo watch for him. My only impression of Ozark so far (he has the volume turned way up) is the profusion of F-bombs. I’ll go for the bold cheddar though. I’m hooked on the German series “Dark”—a complicated sci-fi thriller.

      Yeah, Ozark is pretty addictive. One more season of the show is planned, but I suppose that filming won’t be able to start till a vaccine puts a sort of end to the pandemic.
